Do the small, portable chargers car battery jumpers work?
Halo, Bolt and Energizer are the only brand names of the small ones that I can remember now, but there are others.

And there are also the ones that are about the size of a tool box -- brand names such as Dewalt, Stanley, Jump-n-Carry, etc.

Any recommendations about these things in general?

Of course, I want one that really works. But smaller (more portable) and less expensive would be nice also, if possible. Thanks.

I've got this one. I've only used it once to jump a neighbor's car. Worked like a charm.

I bought this based upon the reviews but haven't had a need to use it. Lucky me.

Bought one at Costco a few years back. D-I-L used it to jump an old V-8 sitting in her garage. It also works on cell phones.
Winpres 12V car jump starter & Portable Power Bank. AC55386.

IIRC it was about 50 bucks. It holds a full charge for months. It sits on the floor in my back seat.

My concern is spending money on something that I won't find out doesn't work until well after the warranty is expired. It's the kind of thing I'd buy and hope I never use it. I could keep it charged for years and one day maybe need it and it won't work. Then I'd be twice as aggravated, 1) the car won't start, 2) the charger I bought and finally need won't work either.

I could always call Triple A, which I pay for anyway. Of course I'd be sitting in a cold car as I wait. But at least all I'd have to pay then is a tip.

Are the larger ones like the Stanley or Dewalt units more likely to actually work?
I guess I just need to think about it some more.

Every time I buy one, by the time it is needed the battery inside is too old....

I'd rather just make sure AAA or something similar is in order.

I've been looking into priority start units instead.... but haven't made a decision on them yet.

We have a Costco ne. Works great. Won’t work on diesels if they are very depleted.
The battery is usually a 12 volt 7 amp hr and they are replaceable

"Any recommendations about these things in general?"

here is my experience:
anything NEW will work for about 18 months.
expensive/cheap/whatever. no problems.
after 2 years, i cannot depend on any.

so...my solution is to buy new ones, never charged once,
super-duper cheap whether on sale, on clearance, Craig's List, etc.
then...after 24 months of no use, buy another and sell the old on CL.

if i actually do use it at least once, i might keep it longer than 18 months,
depending on performance, but nothing exceeds the 2 year limitation.
the $ work like this: buy new $55. sell old for $20. so far, so good.
