In the near term, the steel tariff is also a deterrent. It's cost GM and Ford $1 billion each.
The sooner that gets to some sort of resolution the better.
That’s true but one way or the other it will end, and I'd think (maybe I’m overconfident in GM and Ford to manage their assets) they would not be so short-sighted to discontinue so many things.
It’s a combination of three things: tariffs, CAFE, and demand.
At least personally, there isn’t really anything that I would buy from Ford or GM at this time. I don't think I’d ever buy a truck, and we only buy minivans and small electric cars. I looked at the Bolt, and although I liked it, it didn’t really make sense for us. We don’t need the range, and Nissan was deeply discounting the 2018 Leaf.
Had we known they were going to close 5 plants and affect the lives of at least 15000 people would we have been so eager to give them billions in tax payer funded bailout money? IMO they just threw at least 15000 potential customers under the bus.I for one will never buy another GM product.

If they were allowed to go under you would have more than 15,000 laid off you would easily double that amount not including the suppliers and others. They will put a new product in the Detroit assembly plant because it’s not that old of a plant.

I assume then that you will never buy the products of any other company that lays someone off as well?
I think you'd have to make everything yourself.
Newsflash: Employment levels rise and fall based on economic and market conditions.

You're Canadian, right? Did Ottawa put up a lot of money to keep Oshawa going, also?

Cadillac has used the same styling for so long that they all look dated to me. The headlights, taillights, and sharp body creases have pretty much looked the same since 2005 or so.
Honda and Toyota looks dated as well same designs, beg to differ there.
What a shame, but it's hard to make money when people aren't buying those cars at the right volume. Small cars and sedans are just not desirable in the US, meanwhile CUV, SUV, and truck sales continue to gain marketshare. Everyone I know with the 2nd gen Volt absolutely loves them and it's a shame that GM couldn't figure out how to make cross-platform the powertrain. It would make sense to make a PHEV CUV or minivan.
