At the farm store, I got a sachet of stinky herbs that's supposed to keep rodents away, should be replaced monthly. Works best in an enclosed space, but I just have a carport so I put it on the ground where I park.
I was told to open the hood so the engine cooled off more quickly. Critters look for warm places to nest.

I had the same thing happen one time with a John Deere combine.
Did a remarkable amount of damage. Took out the radiator, fan, fan shroud... even broke the gear housing on the front of the engine.
We believe squirrels were our culprit. We placed a large rubber snake under the car that stays parked outside. No problems since then but it's only been a few months so time will tell.

I had a nest built a couple times on my battery. It was using insulation from the hood. I don't think it has any thing to do with food. It wouldn't be getting any in my car, certainly not the engine. I think it was just a sheltered place with easy access nesting material.
We recently had this issue. The pest control guy had us spray peppermint oil (brand was Rodent Sheriff) and leave the hood open every night we pulled in so the engine cooled down faster and it wasn't such a nice cozy/enclosed place anymore. The spray fades quickly, so you have to use A LOT and spray often.
Dachshunds are the answer to most of life's problems.
GREAT answer! Unfortunately, most daschunds you will find out there will likely have very little varmint dog instinct left, as they have been bred as companion dogs (pets), with "working" not much in demand. If you could find a dachsund from a working bloodline, you betcha. Varmint dog, par excellence.
