I would only buy a certified version of either, so only from an Audi dealer.

"None of the above." Choose again.

If you insist, wouldn't personally buy an Audi (X)4 anything w/53K miles w/o a year over year warranty extensions for some *reasonable* price per year. Two reasons: look up their reliability after a number of years, that's "objective" data. = Sketchy, like most Audis and BMWs. Other is anecdotal, from a buddy of mine: he's been an Audi guy since emigrating here from OZ in Y2K. Without exception, he buys new and dumps them at about five years and 70K miles of DD. That's the point at which they start to seriously break down, "usually", he claims. A4, S4, RS5, now a Q-something bought a year or two ago. Great cars, while they run. He feels he gets his money's worth and who am I to argue with success? I wouldn't touch one, finding Porsche a better option, but...

Seriously, at the complete opposite end of the quality and sport spectrum, I'd pickup a 2008 Lexus IS F for another seven grand in a hot second. It will have more miles, which is mostly irrelevant for a Lexus. Think of it as an Audi RS4 without the dumbass problems those (otherwise cool) cars had: suspension trouble, oil blow-by on the heads, that debilitated them. These are seriously bad ass sports sedans. At this writing, CarMax has one in East Haven, CT in Smoky Granite Mica/Black w/84k miles...I have no dog in this race other than living a bit vicariously through others, today at least (chuckle). I see CT has 60 day warranties, too.

Good luck.

Biggest difference here is the size....the A3 is smaller, so go by whether you'd prefer a mid size or compact car.

The A4 has a more dated, but more comfortable interior.

Engine is the same, reliability and resale value will likely be similar down the road.

That dealership has a 2-star rating out of 172 reviews on Yelp. I don't think I'd do business with them.
