There’s really nothing special about the specific model years he mentioned. Pretty much any Camry made after 2010 is a safe bet, since the 07-09 models were the ones with some oil consumption issues.

Could have easily been a list of the 5 best mind numbing boring used cars or a list of cars to buy you have given up on any sense of enjoyment in life.

I can think of many things more enjoyable than driving a car and I have some of the best. They're just cars. There's a lot to be said for boring and reliable for 99.9% of car owners.

Not a very "brave" list. All listed are a year or two before they were redesigned, so all the bugs were worked out. And no CVT transmissions.

Not for me ... since I was a child I’ve been interested in cars and they are almost living things to me.

Simply running is the lowest possible bar for a car. It's not remarkable in any way.
This is 2019, not 1981. Almost all car brands can achieve running for a long time.

You have to do better than that to be at the top of any "best" list.

Then, why don't they??

In twelve years of owning a Toyota Corolla, I have NEVER had a situation where I have had to call AAA for a tow, for tire service or for any reason.

When I owned domestic brands, I would hit the three or four call maximum with AAA almost every year despite performing ALL mandatory services as laid out in the owners manual.

And that's the point. He's identifying reliable, cheap to own cars.

If you buy a car from a model year that is the last prior to a redesign, the bugs were likely worked out.

Also, one huge advantage of a used car is that you can discover the model's reputation before you buy it.

Most care owners are Not enthusiasts. They just want cheap, reliable, safe transportation from A to B.

1. tire service would be completely irrelevant to the reliability of a particular car
2. owning "domestic brands" is a pretty wide stroke, if a Camry is made in Kentucky would it be considered a "domestic brand?" Did you know all Corollas were once made in Canada? Now they are only made in Mexico and Mississippi......so much for Asian guys in lab coats checking quality control.

Ha ha ^^^^^ When i worked in Gadsden, AL, they just opened Odyssey plant there. I actually saw several patients that worked at it. They HATED them "Asian guys in white lab coats" for the first year factory was up and running, due to very rigorous requirements on job quality they imposed. I am sure, after they LEFT...

When FIAT opened Tolyatti VAZ plant in Russia, same thing happened. First year - under FIAT enginners control - production was indestructible cars. Some still run their roads. But as soon as they left...
Yet, I have no doubt, they do make occasional inspections and no doubt, computers, watching assembly lines, do their reports. World is small, no matter where plant is. At least, the foundations are solid.
