Around the world car comparisons

Here is a comparison of a number of vehicles found via network research. The vehicles include 2 from America, 2 from Japan, and 2 from Europe.

The first 6 links represent each of the six manufactures and the number of each of the cars that have actually sold on eBay in the last 90 days for cash. A description of each car and whether it was sold by dealer or private seller.

The next 6 links are results of crash tests, recalls and complaints by owners of these models brought to you by the (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Models and years of vehicles differ greatly in these surveys so one year to another a car model can rise and fall greatly in Quality.

I have purposely picked car models I've never have owned to keep the selections objective. I have used both of these sites as well as others for gathering information before having purchased new cars at dealerships in the past. I have also sold on this site, Cars which were bought new by me with 200,000 plus miles that could not command $1000 in the local newspaper.

You will notice that miles driven on these cars and sale prices vary widely. The Color Green on the eBay price means it sold at that price. In some case if the best offer option existed on the sale it could have went for less. The sale cars that appear twice have been resold after a sale fell through. Auction and online sales demand your wear your big boy pants if you want to participate. Do your home work or bring an expert and as the saying goes (ca·ve·at emp·tor).

Have fun.

What is the purpose of this data dump? What conclusion are you trying to draw or message you want to convey?

Just the fact that information exists. You can draw your own conclusions. There is an ever growing pile of data called the Internet. That ever growing pile of information is considered garbage to 50% of people and the other 50% considers it a resource which has utility or usefulness. I personally feel that some of the data has value. I am demonstrating the fact that the data exists in numerous forms. I am trying to (teach a person to fish) as the saying goes.

Lets face it cars are a necessity for most of the people in this country. Cars also take a large percentage of a family budget. The extra 50 bucks a month that gas has gone up and the unexpected numerous cold snaps costing an extra 500 this winter are no big deal to a lot of people but to some it means cutting back on necessities. Late for work because the car won't start.no big deal right. Consequences of a non starting car in a medical emergency can be a big deal.

I also build computers and give them away, have been for 20 years.

My car cost me $35 and runs on free fuel (As it has for 43 yrs).

I park it on a hill if I think it might not start.

I had to rescue a 'no-start' Prius from a National Forest Campground... after an entire day of 'extracting'.. it had to ride 350 miles to nearest dealer.

3m fleet miles, mine have never been back to the 'dealer'.

I live in the boonies, it has always brought me home.

I'm now retired... I hope I never see another computer. (tho it has been a great way to make $$ during career).

I prefer a car with:
  1. No Plastic stuff to break
  2. No electronics to fry
  3. No GAS (ICK) that stuff is dangerous)
  4. No Spark Plugs! - no need for that 'wear' component.!
  5. Runs on free 'sustainable' fuel
  6. Will last the remained of my life (no long)
  7. Low impact to Ecology (such as minimal manf and maint costs over last 40+ yrs)

around-world-car-comparisons-buying-selling... Bought a car in Singapore lately! While you MIGHT find a Toyota, Honda, Subaru under $120,000... the car is only a portion of the cost of ownership! Then there is the COE ... (If you get the 'Lucky Draw'...) Remember... 10 yrs MAX!!! then, scrap the car. (that you have spent S$500k+ keeping around. )

Have to agree with Timfountain. Such a strange post! Seems to have no purpose, but then again, this is a public forum so "strangeness" is to be expected.

Some people buying a new vehicle do more research on this than they do on buying a new home, we’re the are going to be living not something that just gets you to point a to point b and back. Buying a vehicle is just buying what you like , but certain people have to knit pick a vehicle to death to see if they want to buy it. Some people take better care of their vehicles than they do their homes i don’t get it. You pay more for a home than a vehicle but some don’t do the maintenance on their homes like they do their vehicles.

Excellent posts. They demonstrates the spectrum of which I'm referring. We have knit pickers, thriftiness to the extreme, a government managed economy in one of the worlds most progressive economy's and strangeness. Each of these posts are are points of view which are relevant to the poster.

The real question is, What's your motivation? I've always been curious about how things work and making a better mouse trap.
Presently we live in a time where free information is available to help fix, maintain and purchase a new or used car. I say that is good stuff.

Stealth Rabbit has whittled his car experience to the lowest common denominator. The knowledge to do that took an understand of diesel engines, creation of fuel from waste products which involved research, study, and finally learning. None of this was innate.

So is Singapore around our corner with no old cars allowed. Will we over analyze ourselves right out of the drivers seat in favor of autonomous unrepairable cars.

"Strange" is also be relevant to experience. Henry Ford made a car out of soy in 1941 now that was strange.

Had the OP listed prices from around the world on an identical year, make and model, it might have been interesting.

When I lived in Spain some years back the Spanish Government put an outrageous import tax on vehicles not made in Spain. At that time, Fiat built a plant in Spain and was selling Spanish build Fiats under the name Seat as one way to get around the import tax.
