Are locking lugnuts necessary? I have a 2016 Chrysler 200. Can I just replace them with regular ones or do I absolutely need the locking ones?

Unless you live in an area where wheels are stolen all the time, no you do not need them. I have replaced plenty of them with regular nuts.

I have always had locking lug nuts on my wheels. Some one tried to steel the wheels off my new truck. I had locking nuts and the key was hidden in my truck. They broke the glass and tried to find the key but no luck. The wheels were not stolen. If you have wheels that are in demand, eventually they will be stolen. Keep the locking nuts on.

I’ve had my spare tires stolen. A new set of tires can cost upwards of a thousand bucks. A set of wheels can be $600 or more for a aftermarket set. A factory set can run at least that much.

The way I look at it is, if you live somewhere where wheels are being stolen, lugnuts are the least of your problem. Move.

Because any lug, security nut including, can be undone by a thief. There are commercially available sockets for that will undo ANY lug nut. So why bother, unless you live in area where thieves are idiots that look for that key.

Eventually, you will either lose it or forget where you hid it and pay extra to tow guy to do your spare.

They can put an socket and a breaker bar and snap that stud with the lock right off, nothing can stop a good thief from stealing anything on a vehicle.

Locking nuts may not stop them but will slow them down. Maybe long enough for a neighbor to spot them and call the police. Last weekend 120 tires and rims were stolen from a dealership not 50 miles from my city. Last year, in a city 75 miles from me, tires and rims were stolen off 160 cars at a dealership.

That’s funny neighbors might call yes but will the police come especially in a high crime area. Call the police now that’s funny especially if you live in Chicago’s south side.
