Don’t be fooled by the Subaru hype. They really aren’t that reliable, and their AWD traction isn’t much better than their competitors. I would get something like a RAV4 or CRV4. They will be reliable and durable in the snow.
VW Tiguan. I’m 6’7 and was most comfortable in that of all the compact and mid size SUVs. It has a ton of cargo space that rivals many mid sizes. Gets mid 30s highway, mid 20s city in real world driving. Does very well in WA/OR mountain passes and even untreated mountain forestry roads with the right tires.
Go big Infiniti QX80 with deluxe touring package and AWD. New is above your budget but used is fine. Mine has been flawless ie never been to shop unplanned nor not been ready to run anytime.
Mine is 2011 new design model. I change oil and filter often. This helped me avoid a lubrication of timing device issue many faced. All we're fixed in factory recall to replace with new design. MPG is not great but with deluxe touring hydraulic suspension system it rides like a dream while being a good off the road vehicle. It's bug so may be more than you need but it's worth a look and test drive.
Not sure how much you care about gas mileage? Most SUV and AWD cars aren't great on gas mileage. Basically, I would pick a 4runner for two reasons, 1 it is reliable and 2 you won't get stuck. Gas mileage is worse than a cross over and it is bouncy.

Any Subaru with separate sets of summer and winter tires. For a long time I drove 134 miles each way in all types of summer and winter (including Lake Effect snow) weather and had no issues. For me, the CrossTrek and Outback seats are super comfortable even for long daily drives (I'm 6'3"). My current 2015 Outback, bought new, has well over 125k miles and has never had an issue. Factory maintenance only. Great gas mileage as well. Absolutely love the Outback for the commute.

Which decade? My last 2 Subarus (Crosstrek and Outback) have been bulletproof.

The RAV4 is made in Canada
The Honda CRV is made in USA.
The Mazda CX-5 is made in Japan.
Always take the vehicle Made in Japan for highest quality.

We haven't had a lick of trouble with our 2018 Outback. And their AWD system is much better than the Honda or Toyota systems.
