Just wonder if anyone knows whether there are side airbags on the third row of an SUV. (In this case, an Outlander). The literature is vague and I don’t know what to look for inside the car. I would doubt that it does, but maybe I’m wrong?

side airbags are accessed via weather seal removal and peeling off roof liner. They are normally seen in a gap resulting after weather strip removal at the top of the door jamb. That's actually very easy to do as strip is not glued, just clipped on. Airbag looks like a roll with zip ties tucked between roof and headliner.
Also, there should be stamped sign SRS or AIRBAG marking their location.

If they were hidden in the seat backrest, it will say same on the door seat side. But curtain airbags are normally up in the headliner.

From the spec sheet, I’d presume yes. If you go to look at one, inspect the rearmost portion around the third row along the roof or the rear pillars for something which says SRS, and also inspect the seats themselves. Some airbags are mounted inside the seats and will have a tag which says so, but I suspect if they cover the third row, they’ll be mounted in the body along the roof and/or pillars.

Thanks.....after digging around more, it looks like the Outlander does not have them back there. (But there is at least a foot between the third-row passenger’s head and the sidewall, so I am not sure if they would really be needed in a crash).
