This is why I wonder what motivates the Uber/Lyft drivers. Reports are that they make very little money anyway, but the companies both have plans to be all autonomous vehicles once they are available, so there is no future in it. Most anyone can drive, but even with training not everyone has the physical skills or aptitude for auto mechanics, especially when it involves so much technology.
Its because the economy isn't that great for everyone. Without Uber/Lyft, who's hiring unskilled workers?
Retail? It's a dying industry. With so many stores closing and retail having less people to do more.
People can only turn to Uber/Lyft to make a few bucks.
With so many immigrants keep pouring into US and not enough jobs. Only Uber/Lyft jobs are very accessible to anyone with a car.
Why not? I loaded my own bags/got my own tags at the airport this weekend. So now we don't need ticket agents/bag people. So taxi drivers with body odor and rude personalities could easily go the way of bowling alley pin setters!
Actually, we now have both. You tag your baggage then hand it over to the ticket agent so she can handle it again or fix what you did wrong.

I was gonna say Amazon needs delivery drivers..but whoops. If driving goes, the logistics process is basically fully automated. Don't need store clerks, don't need warehouse clerks.
The thing is that our society is based on the notion that 80-90% of folks are doing okay. If that figure drops down toward near 50% you're going to get trouble.
I think auto driven autos is a long way away.
It may happen but I know that I, for one - and I imagine many feel like I do - do NOT want to get in an auto-driven car just yet!
I think they have a long way to go before calming the fears most people have about relying on technology to drive us.
Chances are, it will happen but how many years from now? Maybe not in the next 10 years...

Yep, and when it reaches that point, there will be 2 classes, the ultra wealthy and the peasants.(the peasants will barely be able to afford food for their family).

And therein lies a huge gap between the expectations of a largely non-, or even anti-technical public, and what technology can actually deliver.
