I am looking at a 2017 certified preowned XT5 with 47,000 miles. Warranty left would be about 48 months and 53,000 miles. The price would be $30,000 unless I can get it for less. Trade in on my traverse is about $15,000. My car is starting to give me problems. What do you guys think. I haven't bought a used car in probably 30 years.
XT5 is very nice, but what trim level is this car? Better be up there, at least Premium Luxury.
47K is a LOT of miles on a 2017 car.
I bought a 2015 XTS Platinum with way less miles (33K) and a 60 month GM warranty for less than $30K.
Looks like that is the base model plus "Luxury" package which has an MSRP of ~ $50K brand-new. It's not one of the high end trims. (Which would be "Premium Luxury" or "Platinum.")
I would not pay any more than $25K MAX for that vehicle given the mileage. The Clean Wholesale Blackbook on that vehicle is $27,000 less $2,300 for high mileage. ($24,700.) Typically dealers pay about 80-90% of that number for used vehicles.
That means wholesale value is truly ~ $20K-$22K plus $1,000/$1,500 to do the CPO warranty so that takes it to $21,500 - $23,500 wholesale. Retail - or the price you should pay - should be a little more than that.
Just one man's opinion.....

Reason: typo
Basically the same car the OP is looking at, but a higher trim with lower mileage and a year newer.
That car will still have a lot of warranty.
You can always buy an extended warranty later.
5 more years on my XTS Platinum was $1800. It's much more complex than a XT5 Premium Luxury.
I can't argue with that....
On that extended warranty you're referring to - is that an OEM warranty or a 3rd party warranty? (I am NOT a fan of the 3rd party warranties - most of them are junk.)

It is Ally, which used to be known as GMAC. I also wanted nothing to do with a no-name 3rd party warranty.
All non-wear items are warranteed. On my very loaded car I wanted all of the fancy gizmos covered.
It is only valid at GM dealers, which is fine with me. I do have a deductible, which is no big deal on a luxury car.
I want to take it to my Cadillac dealer, who is excellent, plus you get new Cadillac loaners.
