I'd like to know the stats on how many accidents were caused by bees, spiders, etc... Once I had a big spider suddenly show up on my steering wheel while going at least 70MPH on the highway. Having no self-control, this could have easily turned into an incident. Sometimes you hear about solo accidents where the driver drives into an embankment or pole or tree for no apparent reason. I often wonder if it was due to driver trying to swat and avoid such a thing.

Didn't found any recent stats, but there is an article about that:

And 2007 stats:
Bee-careful: 650,000 car accidents caused by uninvited insects

Not proud of it, but I had a wasp-induced accident. Was driving the car with the window rolled down on the infamous Boston beltway at maybe 60mph when a wasp flew in and landed on the window ledge right next to my arm and began crawling towards it. I stared intently at that for a few seconds, which was all it took for me to round the big curve and come on a traffic jam that wasn't in view a few seconds before. I hit the brakes and scrubbed off most of the speed, but was still going maybe 15-20mph when I hit the car in front of me :-(.

100% correct. The driver demographic is likely MORE important than the actual car itself

really great article, thanks for posting! I love the conclusion:

What we can conclude from the research is that when you’re texting you’re as dangerous as someone flailing wildly while trying to avoid getting stung by a bee.

I too had birds fly through my car while driving. lol. It was so funny because we were in a new area with beautiful surroundings and new species. Windows all down, beautiful temps on a spring day. Life was good, until two birds sort of flew inside the passenger window, did a little tumble on the dash, then out the driver window. I was mostly in awe how we all seem to coexist, but it took me a while to gather myself. lol.

Those stories end up on episodes of a thousand ways to die.

Of course. The safest vehicle is the one that doesn't crash in the first place.
