I am looking at a 2010 Nissan Frontier. It's at a used car dealer lot asking $12,999. It's clean with reasonable miles. My experience is that dealers don't give up much on used cars, may be couple of hundreds. I want it for $10K. How much room do I have?

It depends on how long they have had it there, what they gave in the trade, and what they had to spend fixing it up to sell. Generally they can reduce the price 20% and make money, because they are always overpriced, but that doesn't mean they will do it. Average prices are $7,000-13,000 so they are right at the top. You have nothing to lose by making the offer, if they don't agree, walk away and keep looking.

Which body style? Crew cab extended or single? If it’s a crew cab loaded 4x4 Nismo they won’t deal much.

But you can always try. The worse they say is no

It's a two door, crew cab I guess. KBB gives a range from low 10s to high 12s. I checked the VIN. The last seller was another dealer in May at roughly the current asking price. Not sure what to make of it, if the information is complete that is.

You're looking for nearly a 30% discount. You'll likely get ignored. There's usually some good wiggle room on new cars, but there's not fat margins usually on used. Especially something like a small truck. There's much more of a demand.

I was in the market for a truck a few months ago. Saw a bunch of frontiers in that price range. 2013 Model (work truck 5 spd manual) $11K with 80K miles. Car fax came back with an accident but it didn't seem major. I ended up with a Tacoma since that is what I was replacing.

Crew cabs are 4 doors and are the most desirable. Extra cab are second in line with single cab being least desired style. I doubt they will drop 30% off the asking price. Hell try it. The worse they say is no

Here is something else I have found out. The vaunted resale value of the F-150 isn't there. For $13K you can find F-150s at comparable ages. Mileage may be a little more. And this is against a relatively unknown quantity in the truck market. Put it up against a Tacoma and it might actually lose.

If it's very low mileage and hard to find in mint condition, then it's pretty much a no-haggle price, in my experience.

For the same $12,999 price, it's absolutely possible to get into a brand-new 2019 Dodge Journey, and its generous amount of interior space it offers.

Does it really matter how much wiggle room anonymous responders on CD believe a dealer might have on a particular vehicle? If you only want to pay $10K, tell the dealer that's what you are prepared to pay (or walk away). If you are willing to pay more, ask him what the best he can do is (and again, be prepared to walk away if it's more than you want to pay).

Otherwise, there are simply too many potential variables for anyone on CD to give you a sight-unseen assessment of how much the dealer may have paid for a given vehicle and be willing to sell it for. There's no magic formula that can give you that number.
