Someone once gave me a Chevy Vega notchback, working in an engine shop at the time I had visions of putting a small block in it. The more I looked at its innards and the way it was made, I gave it away. Every once in a while I make the right choice.
Thought I would be among the lowest, but apparently not; bought a 61 Ford Galaxie, my first car, for $600.
Then again, it was 1967.
Car ran fine while I owned it for about a year.
$100 for a 1983 Toyota Tercel, bought in 1996. I didn't have a car and my Dad surprised me with it one day when I got home on break from college. I was so completely head over heels to have a car! It was a little rough and dirty, so he and I went to PepBoys and bought new wheel and seat covers, shift knob, and a bunch of cleaners and scrubbed the heck out of it. Was so happy and loved that little car for a couple of years until I upgraded. It was passed on to my Dad's coworker's teenage son for $100
Cheapest... I paid $50 for a 1970 Nova, straight 6 cylinder, had a 2 spd powerglide , no rear brakes and there wasn't a single front suspension bushing left in it, floor board were rusted out. Drove that car for almost three years, then gave it to a friend to use for another year. It was tough in the winter , at stop lights on a snow covered road the rear tire would spin...Lol
Funny story though. For some reason that car had factory front disc brakes which gave it a unique front subframe. I knew someone that was building a pro street Camaro, so sold him that car for $150. Eventually that guys car ended up in Hot Rod magazine.
One of the funniest ones was years ago when my then wife and I were out for a walk around the neighborhood, and we spotted a Fiat Sport Spider sitting next to a house. I knocked on the door and asked the man if it was for sale. He said " Yep, I am tired of my wife dumping money into that car, you can have it for $100.00. Wait, if you get it out of here before she comes home, give me $ 75.00 !! "
I ran home got a car and a tow rope, and it was out of there in about 15 minutes. We restored the car, painted it Ferrari Red, and she drove it for a long time.
A 1964 MG that I bought in 1974 for $400 while in HS - ran for about a year before had to rebuild engine (under $200) - sold it in 1979 for $1200.
