On 09/14/2019. I bought a used car on Craiglist from a used car dealer who said they will mail me the paperwork. I called them today and they say they will mail me the registration today and DMV will mail me the title later. Does this sound right? I went to the DMV. They refused to look up the VIN for me. DMV says as long as I have a temporary registration, the dealer has up to 90 days to finish the paperwork, but they say the dealer should give me the title.

So basically I paid them cash and now drive a car that is not in my name. What should I do?

The temporary registration is not in your name? Who is it registered to?

The temporary paper has the title: Used vehicle Dealer Notice/Temporary Identification. It has the dealer number and the saleperson number on it. And it is sold to me. I called the guy who sold me the car and he insisted that the DMV will mail me the title because that how is dealerships handle the paper. Is there any truth to this?

Yes... the DMV will send you a copy of the title and registration ( in your name) ... It”s the DMV so you’re just going to have to be patient. Lol
The temp you have will suffice until you get the regular registration.

Relax dude. The dealer doesn’t go to the DMV every day. They go once a month or sometimes 45/60 days. That’s why you hav the temp paperwork stuck to the windshield. You have the temporary registration. Yo have the signed sales documents? Is your name on there? It’s your car.

Yes you will get the registration and the new title in the mail.

Thanks. I got scared after reading this:

https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news...le-031114.html

The saleperson says they will mail me the registration and DMV will mail the title. This seems a bit weird. Shouldn't both the registration and title come from one place?

Well “technically” they do come from the same place. I have never received the registration and the pink slip at the same time in one envelope. They always came at separate times. Usually registration comes first title later.
Dealers really can’t give you the title. They give you a temporary paper stuck to the front windshield. Some states are different. What state are you in?

Now for a private party sale yeah you need to see the title, the title needs to be in the name of the person who is selling you the car. I would never buy a private party vehicle of that title wasn’t present and the person I’m dealing with wasn’t the registered owner.

I have never heard of the dealership mailing the registration. In Kansas, you have to have the title from the seller signed over. When in hand, you take it in to the county and pay the taxes, registration, and get the tag. The county takes the title and it goes through the state title office. In about 30-40 days you get the title in your name.

I experienced one issue on a vehicle we purchased from the Toyota dealership. They did not have the title for some reason and it took about 50 or 60 days to get it. I had called them a few times about it. When I got it, I went to the county with it and registered and tagged it, they fined me for being late, or not within the specified number of days. I don't know what took Toyota so long on the title. It was signed over directly from the person who traded it in.

Since then, I always ask if they have the title in hand. Once you give them the money, they need to hand the title over.

The dealer does the paperwork (Form 51) and the DMV mails the title and registration in your name in CA. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/de...hdbk/ch8/ch8_1 You should be fine, this is probably what you signed.
