They never made money in Europe, why would they continue to bleed cash?
Ford of Germany and Chrysler as well as the Opel brand were powerhouses in the 60s and 70s, so much so that cars like the Taunus were considered German cars. Ford Cortina was a fixture in rallies. Who remembers the Simca? I guess they just didn't keep up. Not sure what took their place. Japanese penetration in the European market is nowhere near here.
Europeans decided they'd love to continue driving their own vehicles that have electronic failures that cost several thousand dollars per incident. These are never maintenance-related and tend to happen after warranty, but always before 100,000 km like a slap in the face to anyone who thought about buying one, paying it off, and keeping it for 10 years.
This is why GM "failed" in Europe, and this is why the EU will fail. Arrogance, pride, and insolvency.
Opel was considered a German brand and did not sell bad in numbers, I think Opel lacked a sportscar and a premium sedan over the last years, GM should have labeled the Camaro and Impala as Opels (Calibra and Omega) and sell them in Europe. Maybe Corvette also, as Opel GT.
Opel was once on par with Mercedes in regards to the image but then ruined it. Maybe they should have abolished the label Opel and sell the cars as Chevrolets, including Camaro and Corvette plus maybe Cadillac as premium brand like Toyota/Lexus.
Chevy pulled the Corvette and Camaro from Europe at the end of the summer. Tighter emissions regulations have gone into effect, and Chevy couldn't adapt, or didn't want to make the effort. https://www.torquenews.com/106/corve...ope-later-year

Ford were once on a par with BMW in places such as the UK.
The Ford Granada was the BMW 3 and 5 series of it's time. Although they were never as prestgious as a Jaguar and certainly not anywhere near as luxurious as a Daimler.
Ford used to make really cool cars, the Granada and Capri being cases in point, whilst the Cortina and Escort models were good workhorses, as was the Ford Transit van.
Ford UK has a long history in the UK, and is seen as virtually a British brand, whilst Vauxhall is similar in having a British feel to it,. and Vaxhalls still sell well in the UK.
There should never be private pensions, the government should tax the companies and there should be a public pension that's better than social security. It's socialism but there's no safety blanket left for the middle class other than SS. Private pensions could easily belly up if a company go bankrupt and reorgs as a different name.
Are you kidding? Public pensions are the single biggest budget issue facing most states today.

In a different thread I made a remark of how the Cadillac Catera was an example of an automobile that one would find today with low miles, and heavy depreciation, making it a value buy for anyone looking for a first car. I was made aware by another user that this in fact started out as... an Opel!

Opel had the Insignia sedan, which GM relabeled here as the Buick Regal (2011-2017). I had a 2011 built in Germany. A good, sporty-ish, solid performer.

The Insignia is/was a middle class car like the Passat - even the French build something similar (to whom Opel belongs now), but Opel/GM should have offered a car at least competing with the Mercedes E-Class/BMW 5 Series if not S-Class/ 7 Series. If not in quality at least in power and size.
