We've had a 4 cyl Camry as a rental not too long ago. Nice enough on flat roads but it does have to work rather hard on steeper mountain grades. Would still pick it over a Nissan, which typically has a cheap, uncomfortable, and awful cabin unless you go with one of their top of the line options. Have also drawn a Kia Optima as a rental and found the 'sporty' suspension made me feel every single pavement bump or defect in the road.

We're closing in on four years and have 63K+ trouble-free miles on our four cylinder Subaru Legacy. Comfortable cabin (husband is 6'2" though he prefers seats that are somewhat narrow because he likes feeling held in place) and does everything we want it to and more in non-mountain conditions. Despite the AWD, which when combined with good tires makes it a dream to drive in Florida monsoons, we still get 32 or so MPG on a regular basis.

With the hybrid you get lots of power and torque but much better gas mileage than the 4 cylinder in the real world

Whichever you get make sure it has a timing chain not a belt
