My current car is a 2008 Prius with about 180k on it. I'm thinking if I can run it for another couple of years the range of electric cars may be improved enough to have that work for me. Right now my longest regular drive is 240 miles round trip.
not sure what my next car will be. i have looked at the focus, explorer sport trac, the ranger pick up, among others. however it will be a while before i even consider buying another car. anther option would be to get my 64 falcon up and running again.
I have a few odd-ball personal faves, like the old Mercedes W124-based models. They are not very practical due to increasing rarity of expertise and parts, but I love them. Or... If I can find a good hard-top convertible that has 4 seats and a cushy ride (help me out, here...), that would nicely complement my harsh truck.
If I have to make a practical decision, then it will be based on some kind of formula, like:
- 3-5 years old
- in the 3rd+ model year
- high reliability per Consumer Reports
- comfortable ride
- < 70k miles
- < $15k
- High MPG or electric-hybrid or hybrid
- Not a luxury brand
Likely options will include Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, Subaru Legacy/Outback/Forester... I will have to look at Kia and Hyundai also, because they are now so reliable.
Probably won't buy anything soon, but you never know when the unexpected could show up.

First of all, Consumer Reports should not even be used to judge reliability - it's not accurate - AT ALL. I've worked with them for years and their data, when you compare it to actual OEM data, does not correlate whatsoever. It's a sham organization, at least when it comes to autos. (I haven't dealt with them on anything else.)
Secondly, Hyundai/Kia have major engine issues and have more engines replaced before 100K miles than any manufacturer. They put their money in the "tophat" and then go cheap on the powertrain/chassis, which helps give them a low price. Hyundai/Kia would be on the bottom of my list when buying a used car.
