For a hoot one time I choose a KIA Soul as my rent a car. I really like it and I think it is good bang for your buck. When I suggested such to my son he said no. I dropped it.
>>> I think its marketed to the younger crowd as a hip alternative car. But older drivers would probably be more impressed with it. Good handling in a small package, great ease of entry and exit, budget and value, good ergonomics. Its not a stodgy sedan, so maybe its looks turn some off. I see older people driving( not so) Smart Cars, Sparks, Fiats. They want a small car for just two people and go to an extreme overlooking a more practical alternative because the marketing to them isn't there.
Despite this individual claiming he just wants a basic commuter car, the $25,000 budget, combined with past experience, tells me that he will soon be seeking an upgrade if he's driving what essentially amounts to an econo-box with cardboard interior panels. Even if it's dead-on reliable.

He is 52 years old. He will probably pick whatever car suits his fancy.
Mom is just seeking some input about commuter cars.
I recently rented a Jetta and put 750 miles on it over the course of a long weekend. It got 49.8 mpg in combined city/hwy driving; I was completely blown away!! A few weeks prior to that, I rented a Hyundai Elantra; it got over 45 mpg in similar conditions.
He has decided the Corolla is bring looking and is now interested in Honda FIT.
I have friends who just replaced their Fit with another Fit. They definitely like them and they've lasted a good long time. For basic commuting it's a solid choice. That was the first thing I was thinking when I wound up in a Prius. Ten years and 150,000 miles later I think I made a good choice, but that doesn't say the Fit isn't a good car.
