The first thing I do when I get a car is go out and get a spare made. I have never lot a car key and only once locked it in my car, but it's best to be prepared. I noticed a car running in the parking lot at work today - a guy locked his key in the car with it running.

Yes. Pretty much all new cars come with 2 keys/fobs. On older vehicles, I will have one cut if it didn't come with two.

I will have a "dumb" key made, even if it won't start the car, just to open the trunk or passenger door in case I lock my key fob in the car accidentally.

I have spare car key at work, at home, and at my son's home. (Same with my house keys, plus I have spare house keys in my car, and outside the house - hidden of course.)
This "strategy" should take care of any misery combination that could possibly occur, I think. Of course, nothing happened, yet

Now we all know where to look for your keys... LOL!!!
BTW: what happen if the truck get stolen? Someone would get extra kudos...

If you have a FOB, then you should rather have this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MDF5TX9..._t1_B07D5FBL2C

because of this:
https://www.carlock.co/blog/en/2019/...teal-your-car/

As of right now only Audi E-tron, Jaguar XE, Range Rover Evoque and Mercedes-Benz B-Class are cars with wireless fobs that resist the attacks by either using more secure wireless technology or by going to sleep when they haven’t been used for a set time.

All my cars in the last 15 or so years come with two sets (either Fobs, or Keys) as well as a valet key.

With remote entry or keyless entry, locking my keys in the car would be unlikely as I typically lock it with the fob.

My EV uses my phone as the key. So same thing. It does have an actual key (RFID card) that I typically just keep with my other credit cards. That would be the only vehicle where I'm actually carrying around a 2nd key for it.

We have spare keys for all 8 of our cars. They used to be piled in a drawer near the front door, and since all the cars are the same make, it was extremely difficult to find the one you needed in a hurry. I finally got around to putting color-coded key tags on them, and it was one of the best things I've ever done. We need the spares because sometimes one of us (we have four drivers in our household) wants to take a different car from usual but the main key is on someone's key ring and they are not home...

Yes! We always keep three. One sits at home, and one on each my wife's and my key ring.

One of my vehicles has a "limitation" that only two keys could be programmed at a time. Something stupid Dodge addressed halfway through the model year. It would cost $$$ for a module upgrade on a 15 year old car (2004 Durango, Dodge's first vehicle with the low-speed CANBUS), so we keep two actives and a cut spare, ready to program. You can program it yourself so long as you still have one active key.
