We will be in Texas for a few weeks in the spring and will have a need to drive in the Dallas, Houston, and Corpus Christi areas.
In the past we have driven from Washington to Texas but for us it is a three day drive each way with time, fuel, motels, and meals that make it expensive work. We are looking for this family visit to fly into and out of Dallas and to rent a car for the time we are there. I expect it will mean about 2500 miles and three weeks car rental.
Any suggestions to ease the effort and cost on this effort?
Yes, join the various car-rental websites like Priceline and Orbitz, compare prices and choose the best. Also, use automated discount-code add-ons/extensions, they try/apply various discount-codes at checkout to the website you are using...........I have saved a lot of money with these.
Look on Turo and you can choose the exact car you will rent. You never know what you will wind up through the more economical rental companies.
That being said, I have used Hotwire's mystery deal and gotten over the years an nearly new Camry to a 3 YO Jetta with 85K and it always seem to be from Hertz.
Check your insurance. Then double check your insurance.
If in any type of accident - the rental companies keep coming up with new fees.
Out of service fees.
Towing fees.
Storage fees.
Depreciation fees.
And others.
If you have a local insurance agent go talk to them.
If you think that your Mastercard/Visa covers all - best to check with them. They are not all the same.
I always go with Alamo. Never had an issue and they are much better than the big ones but you really don't know what car you will get but it will be the size you reserve. That said, make sure you check weekly if you reserve well in advance. I reserved a RAV4 sized vehicle 4 months in advanced for a Colorado trip. Total cost was $1300. Over the months the price kept dropping and I kept cancelling and reserving the cheaper rate. Ended up paying around $800 for 10 days and that was with their insurance.
I'd contact Enterprise and explain your agenda and get a quote, this will
give you some ammo shopping others
While your waiting on them, check with business that you already do business with
and see if they offer discounts, AAA, Costco, NRA, AARP...you get it
