If he's looking for comfort, neither of these would make the cut.
I'd be looking at a Lexus ES, Avalon or a Buick LaCrosse without Dynaride. Comfort is king with all three of these sedans.
They're closing out the latter so there may be a screaming deal to be had.

The Hyundai Azera and Kia Cadenza are also competitors in this market segment. The Azera was discontinued in the U.S. but the Cadenza is still around and there are still lots of new 2019 models and even a few 2018 models sitting on lots, some for as little as 25 grand. That's a lot of new car for that kind of money.

Cadenza's ride quality is not quite as good as the other three.
Still, it's worth considering. It's not popular and there will be deals.

Buick LaCrosse is a very good choice for "Comfortable Ride in Texas".

It could very well be the state with the most Buick LaCrosse's in church parking lots on any given Sunday. Good chance there is a nice Buick dealer network in Texas.

I'm a big fan of the previous generation (2019) Hyundai Sonata. Handsome car and much more elevated/upright seating position than most other sedans (esp. Honda Accord or Toyota Camry/Avalon). Simple controls, reliable time-tested 6 speed auto/naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine.

I hate to randomly post here, but can anyone tell me how comfortable the Nissan Maxima is as a car?

The Maxima is tuned more toward the taut/sportier side than the cruiser-type tuning found in the likes of the Avalon or the LaCrosse.

Audi A4 is related to the VW Passat so if there’s a VW dealer nearby consider looking at the Passat. Of the two you listed I’d go with the Legacy but move up to the six cylinder.

Looks like Subaru no longer has a 6 cylinder in the Legacy. They do have a turbo four.

The problem with Audi is after the warranty runs out maintenance is costly. Uses high test gas too.
