When you jump start a battery and you put the clamp on the terminal - is it okay if you put the clamp on the bolt and screw which are right next to the terminal?

I'm talking about the metal strip that goes around the terminal and is held in place by a bolt and screw. I think it would work as it's all metal.

My car has a red plastic thing that covers the positive terminal. There is some red plastic that also goes around the terminal so I had to pull it apart, so that the clamp would touch the terminal. It may be a design error? Why do most cars have the red plastic thing on only the positive terminal?

I wasn't actually jump starting the car, I was practicing.

Best to put the clamp on the terminal itself as there may be corrosion between it and the bolt/nut.

And the red plastic cover is to insulate the positive terminal from any accidental shorts, which can cause large sparks and injury.

The negative terminal doesn't need one because the entire car is connected to it.
