We are leasing a VW Jetta for $211 per month and paid $2200 up front. We didn't want to have a large payment for a few years, and we don't buy used. The Jetta replaced a 15 year old car we bought new that was totalled in an accident. The lease includes all maintenance. You can probably get similar deals on other brands. Heck, the sales price on the Jetta was $16,500, so you might look at buying a new one.

Actually, I'd get this... pretty stylish for $13K.

I would argue against a Toyota or Honda unless you know for a fact that they have been well taken care of. They command a higher price than any other brand when buying used. In my experience, they have often suffered from poor maintenance and abusive driving as well. You're best bet is any four door sedan equipped the way you want it with low miles and a good history of maintenance. If you can find a "grandma car", that's even better.

Betcha the engine only has the equivalent of 30K-40K though.
That car got driven, but it's really clean. I know someone that's actually seen it.
If I were in the market, I'd probably buy it myself. New MSRP was probably $83K, although they probably ended up selling it for $60K.

In your case, Volt. They're a pre-owned bargain and you'd almost never use gas.

$15k?

I'd buy a 2002 Subaru WRX, a '93 Cherokee (for a spare) and a Nissan Frontier. With the extra money, I'd buy beer.

For a car I would go with a Camry. I had a Solara for 5 years. It was the best car I have every owned. It was an 02. I hated to see it go, however, I wasn’t driving it much. I do not like the newer Honda cars.

A Subaru would also be on the short list of what I would buy.

If I was going to go SUV, I would go with a newer Jeep. Renegade or Cherokee. Or a Toyota RAV. I’d also consider an Escape.
