Well there are exceptions. The Soul ranks very highly on resale value. Which helped it win the KBB 5 year cost to own award.

"The key advantage that the Soul has over its competitors is its high residual values,” said Eric Ibara, director of 5-Year Cost to Own for Kelley Blue Book. “This year, the Soul ranked third in Best Resale Value, which translates into a low depreciation cost — the factor that accounts for one third of its overall ownership costs. While the Soul is credited with low costs in nearly all 5-Year Cost to Own categories, it also has the lowest financing costs and state fees in its segment.”

A Korean car versus a made in Japan car.

No brainer.

Try not to focus solely on Resale value as the five-year ownership costs are more important.

Some criteria to consider

1. Performance/Fun to drive
2. Comfort
3. Styling
4. Fuel Efficiency
5. Price
6. Features
7. Predicted reliability
8. Interior quality

I realize there is a price difference but if you really want all the points mentioned you should start with:
Porsche Macan and don't go lower than Audi Q3.

The 2 appliances you mentioned only hit points 4 & 5.
Life is short, if you can afford it, go for the best vehicles in the segment.

Besides the massive loss by depreciation. Set up an IRA with goal of $10,000 to fund those potential expensive services and repairs.

That's wrong perception.
Porsche and Audi are not only 100's time more fun to drive and automotive benchmarks, but also more reliable since they are designed by top experience engineers, not wanna be cheap Asian copies.

Question is how much you love driving and what makes you feel good inside when driving.
Drive them and see, there is no comparison!

Well if they are such great vehicles they barely sold $20,000 of them in the US last year alone with sales peaking in 2018.
