With more people than ever staying home to lessen the spread of COVID-19, their sedans, pickup trucks and SUVs are parked unattended on the streets, making them easy targets for opportunistic thieves.
I am more curious, what they gonna do with them? I mean - stolen cars. Otherwise, yes, burglaries... Don't leave expensive items in your cars. Take that faceplate off your $1000 stereo...
People still leave their doors unlocked? Keys inside?
I remember where I use to live, so many people did it, they put out an advisory asking people to please lock their cars doors. Thieves were just hitting dozens of cars a night, opening the doors and grabbing whatever.

I find this to be surprising. Most cars around here are parked in the garage or driveway and only when they have 3-4 are they in the streets. When I was working at the office in Seattle I had to park in a 5 level garage a block away that had break-ins and thefts on a regular basis. I consider mine to be much safer here with me working at home than it was at work.

They do what they normally do with stolen cars — strip for parts or sell them to outfits that can wash/ fabricate title or get them out of the country.
Catalytic converter theft is definitely on the rise. Two quick cuts and they're off with some untraceable precious metal. The literal rise of SUVs has made for easy access.
It could also be insurance fraud for people behind in their new car payments. Some used car lots sell theft recovery cars. They look nice but someone behind in their payments probably aren't keeping up maintenace.
