Hey guys, I'm currently living in Italy for at least the next year or so, and I was wondering if I bought an old camper van here (thinking Fiat Ducato or Alfa Romeo), how do I find out if it would be road legal in the US? My employer will ship back a vehicle for me and I was thinking it'd be cool to bring back a classic souvenir to travel around in. Thanks in advance!
I would try contacting the manufacturer's US based, corporate office, and see what they say. However, don't get your hopes up. If the manufacturer doesn't already have that particular vehicle crash and emissions certified for US usage, the odds are slim that you'd be able to import it.
Years back I saw a Fiat Ducato in national park in US and another somewhere in Florida, took a photo because I wanted to google it. Also saw the MOST unusual bus at Navaho lands out west, filled with Asians, it was for both sleeping and touring. It was red and quite long and tall.
Now what would be the restrictions on it, would it need to be registered as a "vintage vehicle" and only be used for limited purpose? BTW I'd be moving out west to a tax-free state like Washington or Nevada. Thanks!

Every state has different rules.
In my state one can get "Antique" plates if vehicle is over 25 years old. BUT. With antique plates one can only drive to and from antique vehicle gatherings and "meets". Or for parades. Not for daily driver.
Import it to Canada IF they will take it. How are you going to decontaminate an Italian vehicle that can be slept in?
Nice to contemplate a vintage vehicle, but at this time it will be more difficult to import an Italian vehicle than it is to disembark people from those anchored cruise ships. They are going to start delivering food to the cruise ships by helicopter.
