The Crosstrek does have the capacity to handle single track logging roads, unlike many of its peers. My take on the 'sport' part of sport utility vehicle is whether it can get you to an isolated forest service campground, so I'm willing to sort it into SUV even if it's not something you can use to tow.
Even if it is pretty much a rebadged Fiat, my sister loves her Jeep Renegade for its ease in parking in a small city spot during the week and its ability to haul camping gear and a kayak on the weekend to wherever she wants to explore.
Crosstrek is one of the best rated small crossovers.
Mmmmk. Never said it wasn’t a fairly decent car. Just that’s there’s nothing that SUVish about it. Subaru manages to build non-SUVs and convince people, somehow, that they are. They started that with the Forester.
Well since pretty much all so-called SUVs today are car-based call it a crossover or whatever you like.
Subaru can't build enough other vehicles to keep up with demand. Between their excellent reliability, marketing, and products they offer today they are offering exactly what consumers are wanting.

For subcompact, I’m taking the Bolt EV. It has decent power, sufficient space, enough range as a DD, and No more complex drivetrain issues .
The only downside is that it’s FWD only. But that will change in 2022 with the gen 2 Bolt.
None of the other subcompact offerings you mentioned have a plug in model in the USA, so I won’t be looking at them. I’m not giving up a deal that involves a $7500 credit and zero Maintainence for the first 3 years.

If you select the turbo engines with the Soul or the Kona they will run circles around all the others mentioned here. The magazine I respect the most, Car and Driver, tested a turbo Kona, 6.1 seconds from 0-60.
What does it mean? Well, these two can drag race a Jaguar E-type or a Lamborghini Miura and they'd be head-to-head to a point. After that the classic supercars would get ahead due to their higher top speed.
I'm way too old for that sort of driving but I do enjoy our turbo Kona. It is perfect for the two of us plus Tobi the Airedale, good gas mileage, reliable, easy to park. But I got it for reason number one: it is pure joy to drive. The DCT is a dream, and midrange acceleration from the turbo is addictive.

Lol I don’t need the cheerleading. Subaru makes fine vehicles. My wife is leaning that way to replace her van.
I just don’t understand where some vehicles get the crossover or suv designation when they kinda just...aren’t. That’s all.
