man thats a tough one. i drive 24 miles round trip 7 days a week.to work only. 78 chevy half ton swb truck.350 v8 stock engine,350 turbo tranny nice ride.chrysler purple,in color.i fuel up at about 40 bucks every week or 2 top fuel so the old engine gets what it needs.more or less if road trips to pick up stuff.
The answers seem to confirm my belief that people in the US are automobic. Addicted to the automobile. Kids will go hungry before some welfare parents give up their car and trips to the 7/11 for lottery tickets and the crack house for drugs.
No, Americans have no choice. We are completely reliant on cars because that is how our infrustructure is made up. I am considering the move to bicycle, but it is dangerous where I live to bike to work.
you guys keep making these threads like it's actually possible to stop driving. outside of living in the center of a major metropolitan area, we can't. we've made everything too sprawled out to make it feasable. i live right in the center of a small city and the nearest grocery store is 2.5 miles away, for instance. nearly every job outside of retail something or other is at least double that if not more, in any which way. everyone keeps saying OMG america is addicted to cars but the fact is we've built our landscape in a way that it's impossible for most of us to live without them.

There is nothing wrong with WALKING between 3 and 5 miles. I'll admit anything over that is excessive...but within 5 miles, it can be walked.
It's too hot 1/2 the year to walk or bicycle here, and unsafe to do it all the way to Miami. Looks like I will have to switch to woodgas and just keep on driving.
I live 15mins walk from the mall where I live so I don't need a car for that as long i don't buy much. As for work, i would take me 1hr and 45 minimum to get to one of my jobs and 1hr for my other job if i walk, done it before. But not something I would like to do in the winter time. I say if the price of gas goes up to $5 per gallon, i would use my car less, but would stop me from driving it. If it goes beyond the $8 mark, I think I would quit and find a place closer to my work.
No matter how high gas prices go, I'll have to drive. If gas prices went really, really high, the economy would probably be in a depression and I along with many others would lose my job. At that point, I would only have to drive to job interviews.
Thankfully i work at home so getting out of the house is usually just for running errands and doing groceries. Probably less than 10 miles a week so gas won't affect me quite so much as others. we also have 3 vehicles so my husband alternates cars each week until they are all out of gas then we just fill them all up at the same time.
