The only way they're fun is if your daily commute involves rock crawling. Also, you may be surprised to know that a lot of folks think they're the opposite of cool. But, to each his own. If what the Wrangler offers speaks to you, more power to you.
Some of what you say is true, but driving a manual transmission, two door Jeep Wrangler top down and/or doors off in nice weather is a BLAST. I run errands Saturday morning just for fun with mine and it is 17 years old and still going strong.

Anything manual transmission. In any case, nobody can expect that Operation realizes how to drive a manual transmission.

Possibly one of those Honda CVT "programmed" vehicles with paddle shifters may be entertaining. Operation would need to understand that nothing was moving or that it is a reenacted shifter.

I can't argue with that - it would be hard to not have fun with both an open top and a manual transmission.

I would agree with most vehicles being recommended...Civic SI, WRX, GTI, Mustang, Camaro, 86/BRZ, Miata, etc. One other car I'd recommend is the Accord Sport 2.0T. You could probably find a used one pretty close to your budget and get a little more room compared to the others mentioned.

Another vote for the Miata. I have/had three. Honestly, I enjoy the NA the most although I haven't driven the ND yet. Snow tires in the snowy winter is no problem.

Budget 20k used or new.
At least 25mpg.
Fun to drive.
Sedan/hatchback/crossover/pickup any works.
Most of this is all in your mind. One does not need a sports car to avoid boring.
I drive a 2009 Nissan Versa that I paid $2,500 for. And that car is fun to drive (for me) as I know that my money is placed in other directions that also create fun.

The answer of a non-car guy.

Nissans with CVTs should all be avoided, it is a $2500-3k repair bill waiting. Most of them fail around 70k - 110k mi. It is planned to get people to lease them and the dealerships dump them for peanuts for the unlucky uninformed buyer who thought they got a cheap used Nissan for $2-4k. But it costs around another $2-3k as it is the only car the owner can afford. I saw CVT Maximas for around $6k, 09'+ I would never buy even though it looks luxurious inside I know it's timebomb. Same goes for those CVT Muranos and Altimas.
