That's the most fair way to tax those who pollute the most traveling long distances.

If freeways won't be "free", people may start using electric trains.

A vehicle mileage tax could be on the table in talks about how to finance the White House’s expected multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

If they repeal the gas tax and tax on EV registrations then it’s fine to me. It may be the only way to make things ‘fair’.

But, to be honest, people who travel long distances already pay the most, because they buy the most gas.

When you'll enter a route in Google Maps and it'll show "Tax $200", it'll be more obvious.

None of this stuff stands a chance of passing in the Senate anyways, unless they do away with the filibuster, which isn’t likely.

It's just another way of collecting the Road Tax.
US politicians never oppose to road tax increases to fund "green deal and infrastructure".
---
I just used my calculator.

The new infrastructure bill is $3 trillion. It's almost approved.
The number of US taxpayers is 143 million.
$3000000000000÷143000000=$21,000 per taxpayer.

If the tax will be $0.5/mile, then each taxpayer will cover the bill by traveling 42,000 miles.
She will get super good roads in exchange for that money.

I think they should base vehicle tax on the weight of the vehicle.

Ridiculous. People commute to work because they have to. Electric trains? Where are these trains? Amtrak rails are nowhere near enough to cover the country for this to work.

It would also bad for the economy as it will negatively impact tourism, vacationers, etc. What about RV's? Drive to the beach or mountains for the weekend?

I regularly travel one hour to get to my favorite restaurant. That would be out with a mileage tax. This is a large, large country.

I think it's ridiculous. It's a regressive tax aimed at the lower middle-class and working-class. Way to stiff all the guys who drove to deliver you all your stuff during the pandemic, so you wouldn't have to take any risks.
