"The average age of vehicles on U.S. roadways edged higher in 2021, hitting a record of 12.2 years, as Americans challenged by high car prices and slim pickings on dealer lots held on to cars longer.
This was the fifth straight year the average vehicle age in the U.S. has increased, according to new data released Monday by research firm S&P Global Mobility.
Vehicles on average have been getting older in the U.S. for the past two decades as quality has improved and cars generally are lasting longer, analysts say."
How old are your cars? I have a 2012 Fusion and a 2014 Escape. I have no plans to replace either car.
It is interesting, the average transaction price for new vehicles keeps going up, up, up - as if everyone has all the money they need; but this stat indicates that there are an awful lot of people who are not in that new car buying class... two Americas. Frequency distributions I've seen are not actually bimodal, they are kind of a highly skewed single peak with the peak set below the new car buying class income level, and then a long right "tail" towards higher income.
I had one car going on 21 yrs. - my current one is 13 and hoping it will last for years yet. Not sure how old the car I got in high school was (a Nova), not even going to count the piece of junk Gremlin or Neon - I believe in driving cars into the ground, never was nor will be into having to have a new car every couple years.
I bought a 2020 Forester Premium for $30k back in 2020. Two years on, it’s valued at $28k by my dealer. My cat clawed up the back seat. A German Shepherd has clawed up the door sides. There are big scratches on the hood that I have no idea where they all came from. The car has been through the wringer.
I never remember anything like this. I got 0% because of the COVID shutdowns. I doubt you’d find that now. I drove by that same dealership two weeks ago - a few Crosstreks and some sedans on the new lot. No Foresters, Outbacks, or Ascents.
I don’t think I’ve ever owned a car longer than 3 years. But, I have owned cars that were more than 10 years old when I had them. Only 3 years ago I was driving a 2003 Subaru Baja.
All my cars have gone to s*** after 80K miles. I think the folks that praise the merits of getting 200K out of a car are those than can do their own repairs.
You do reach a point (unless you are a mechanic) where repairs begin to exceed what payments would be on a comparable vehicle.
