Which one is better?

Biggest complaints for the RAV4 is it has a traditional design, uncomfortable front seat, and is noisy.

Biggest complaints for the Tucson is the dashboard has no buttons and is touchscreen so easy to get dirty and can be hard to manage while driving.

The one thing I noticed about the new Hyundai Tucson is that it looks like a clone of Lexus SUVs from the sides.

I buy Toyota’s and Honda’s only…other than a LS1 Z28 and Trans Am…and a 5.0 foxbody Mustang when I really young and wanted to go fast cheaply. Never even considered a Hyundai or Kia so I don’t pay any attention to what they have. I know quite a few horror stories with Hyundai’s.

When it comes to hybrids I wouldn’t consider anything other than a Toyota. They’ve been doing it a long time and their hybrid system is probably the most reliable by far.

No one here can answer this question. Read reviews, do your own research and make up your own mind. Be prepared for the "Toyota is king" and "Hyundai is crap" crowds along the way. Don't be a sheep and make up your own mind.

They are very close in most categories, but around here the Toyotas were "market adjusted" and I could get a Tucson for MSRP. Consider that Hyundai's warranty is much better out of the box and is honestly apples vs. oranges compared to Toyota. We added bumper to bumper for 10 years/100k miles for just $1,600 more. Also, Hyundai's HTRAC AWD system is rivaled only by Subaru in my opinion. Get a Hybrid SEL with Convenience Package, and you'll get a touchscreen that has knobs if you're so inclined.

After all things were considered we got the '22 Tucson Hybrid SEL with Convenience Package and absolutely love it. Nearly 6k miles without a hiccup.

Here's a good comparison article on the two platforms:

2022 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2022 Toyota RAV4 Comparison

Hyundai/Kia have been cleaning up in quality and reliability reviews lately. Meanwhile, Toyota has had a number of issues and is slow to update their models. Honda, bland, boring.

I test drove both before deciding on Tucson Hybrid for the main fact it just drove a lot better. Smoother, faster, quieter.

Technology is better.

I agree that I hate the all touch screen/no knob movement that Hyundai is going to. And I hate the push button gear select (not sure if Rav4 had standard one or not).

Style is objective, I actually prefer Rav4 looks over Tucson but the Tucson is unique.

If you go with an open mind and test drive the cars at face value, chances are you are going to pick the Tucson. It just feels and drives better with better technology.

Note that the Tucson still uses traditional 6-speed (yes, only 6 speeds but it's sufficient) whereas the Rav4 I believe uses variant of CVT.

Rav4 has better fuel economy. In real world driving, in warmer weather (spring, summer) I'm getting 35-38 mpg city driving in the Tucson. In winter it does decrease but that's for all hybrids/EV vehicles.

I'm almost certain the Rav4 gets better than that, partly due to CVT.

But there is something to be said about being a Toyota. If you are a fan of them, can't go wrong with the Rav4. It was my first choice before I had test drove the cars.

The Tucson is Hyundai's best selling vehicle in the US with 25% of Hyundai sales in first quarter 2022.
The RAV4 is Toyota's best selling vehicle in the US with 22% of Toyota sales in first quarter 2022.

Tucson now uses 8-speed as of 2022. They stopped using 6 speed as of 2021.
RAV4 uses CVT only for it's hybrid.

  • 36.6 mpg 1.6 L 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Automated Manual- Selectable (e.g. Automated Manual with paddles) 4 Cyl Auto(AM-S6)
    .

Tucson also has a plug-in hybrid version which goes 33 miles fully electric, while the plug-in hybrid RAV4 goes 42 miles fully electric. The Tucson PHEV is cheaper than the RAV4 Prime PHEV.

Yes it does but they are both in the same basic class.

Honda introduced the first hybrid into North America with the Insight in 1999. "A study in 2014 found that the Insight still ranks as the most fuel-efficient United States EPA certified gasoline-fuelled vehicle. This is with a remarkable 83.1 miles per gallon, an utterly extraordinary statistic. " While I always check the latest Consumer Report's reliability charts, I'd have no worries buying either a Honda or a Toyota hybrid.

Tucson Hybrid still uses 6-speed. The Gas version uses the 8-speed. This is for US Market.
