Last year, I bought a Lexus NX 450h+. No, it was definitely not under $20k, and I paid cash.
Fortunately, I found a dealer that didn't add the typical $5k markup, and I was able to score my new vehicle for ~$55k after deducting the credit for my trade-in.
I bought a 1984 Dodge Omni in fall of 1983. It was a good looking car and good riding but lots of trouble.
I bought a new Dodge Omni back then also, but mine was in the spring of 1985, so it was a 1985 model. Mine was the Carroll Shelby version -- the GLH -- not the GLH turbo -- in fire-engine red. Man that thing was a piece of junk. Got rid of it 18 months later because it was always in the shop. That was my first new car, and if I remember correctly, was about $7500.
I purchased a 2003 Toyota Tundra pickup - SR5 Access Cab, 4WD, V8, TRD off-road in 2002. It was not under $20K. (I think it was around $23K.) Still using it as my main vehicle; it has 153K miles.

The other topic has me wondering how well one of the purported reasons for the lack of $20K and under vehicles is that as vehicles have lasted longer and longer, these used vehicles have become greater and greater competition for the lower-end of the new vehicle market.
So when and what was the last vehicle you purchased new, and was it for under $20K?
Well, it was "New" to me 2005 Chevy Express 3500 bought it 2017 with 95K miles on it (College Van) had front end damage, garage fixed it, I bought it for $9400. Has 160K on it now. In about 6 years. Lived out of it for all this time, now considering letting it go. Probably for $3K as I've now landed at a retirement center and the buses are cheap.
The last car I bought new for less than $20k out-the-door was a 2001 MK IV VW GTI 1.8t as a leftover in September at a discount. MSRP was a bit more than $20k. That was my commuter car for 6 years. I put 164,000 miles on it.
I’ve bought 10 cars in my life that were all new. The most recent in July 2022 had an MSRP something north of $40k.
I drove a family hand-me-down in High School and college. That was bought new as a stripped spare car in 1972 for $2,000. I got it in 1975.
The last brand new vehicle we bought was a 2014 Toyota Venza Limited. It was $45k out the door.
We try to buy slightly used when possible to dodge some of the depreciation but even used vehicles are expensive. My wife's 21 Armada Platinum (21k miles when we got it) was still $62k.
I had an '86 2dr Shelby Charger. It was the turbo version. Man, that car was a lot of fun, and I beat the living snot out of it. Sort wish I could find a really clean one now.
