We have put one of these permanant air filters in our car and have done that with every vehicle since my first honda civic. We get an extra five miles per gallon out due to this little change. Costs under 40.00
I have had many different filters and while there is nothing wrong with a K&N I would say your estimate of fuel savings is very exaggerated.
nope. I've clocked it with every vehicle. With my honda civics, we got six miles extra per gallon. With my nissan quest, it was four. With my Mercury Villager, also four. With my Honda Odyssey, it was six. With my 1998 Toyota Sienna (my current vehicle), five. I would not purchase it with each vehicle if it weren't for this savings.
Evidently, the cars just run cleaner, using it.
However, even if you were only extending it by one mile per gallon, the thing pays for itself right away.

What is your schedule for washing these out and what procedure do you use?

Impressive improvement, Alicenavada
K & N's are great but it sounds like your old air filter was super dirty so ANY new filter would have helped.
Another simple way to improve gas mileage is to check Tire Pressure on a regular basis.
I've used K&N's in many cars myself, and I don't believe that for a second, unless the car was wildly out of tune beforehand with an inch of dust atop the old filter.

How did you calculate these figures and did you have a scan gauge II or some other trip computer in place cuz an extra five miles per gallon just on an air filter is not accurate unless some other mods were done as well.
Reason am asking is I have a Weapon R CAI on a Mazda 3 and I dont even get close to five miles per gallon after that mod so am just a lil curious.

Just by checking the mileage on the odometer after filling up. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I rarely use my air even in the summertime.
Anyway, I think all the skepticism is funny because what the heck reason would I lie?
