What is normally the problem when you are driving and the vehicle seems to miss a gear only at the bottom of a small incline going up?
I am going to take it to a tranmission specialist but since the hubby is out of town I dont want to get into a total transmission fix if it is not needed.

Sounds like your describing a slipping automatic transmission...

Check the fluid first for proper fill level and also for color and smell... it shouldn't look or smell burnt...

If it is low, add the right kind and see if it improves...

If the level is fine... chances are you are looking at a rebuild... anywhere from a $700 (Some 1960's Fords) to $6,000 or more for some of the new... especially imported 5 and 6 speed units...

One of your gears may be on the blink. That being said, you may still be able to drive with that one gear missing. I drove a Dodge van for 16,000 miles with second gear missing out of its 3-speed automatic transmission.

Check the fluid...mine has done that before and it was low. You have to check the level under the correct conditions for your car...I'm paranoid and would do this myself because some unscrupulous mechanic could just say you need a new tranny...you should at least look at the fluid to see if it looks burnt...most auto tranny fluid is red, but yours might be different.

What kind of car are you driving? Is it automatic transmission? If so, probably it's low on fluid, don't over-fill it, probably it needs only something like a cup full of ATF.

Check under your hood and/or in the owner's manual for the type of ATF you need to use.

If the fluid has a burnt smell, yeah, it needs to be changed but the immediate problem is probably level.

Thanks everyone. It is a 2007 Dodge Caravan. I checked the fluid and it is just a very "little" below the line and doesn't smell burnt to me but I could be wrong. It does not do this on every hill and never at the same location at the same hill either. Just comes and goes. ??

Mechanic at dealership told me the fluid is dirty and does not smell burnt, he said that when this happens there is normally some wear to the transmission for some reason. He put it on a machine that didn't find anything wrong but when he drove it the machine showed nothing but it did miss a gear lightly that he said may be an O2 sensor causing it.

How does the O2 sensor cause a transmission to miss? If that is the case.
I am taking it in on Monday and leaving it to change the fluid and filter on the transmission and have the O2 sensor replaced.

Wouldnt the machine he put it on show something if the gears have problems?

Car systems are computer operated... to the point of determining when the transmission shifts as related to engine performance...

Also, "A Code" generated from the O2 sensor can affect all systems because they are all related to meet stringent emission requirements...

I'm glad you took it in and documented the problem... I've done a fair amount of Lemon Law cases in California and early documentation is very important...
