I was looking through Jegs and saw a Filtermagnet for sale and did some research on it. I think I'm gonna go cheap..with the Radio shack magnets stuck to the outside of my filter.
... 99 bucks is a bit steep for a sleeve and some magnets.
I read somewhere a long time ago that most of the damage to a car happens when you cold start it and the oil has pooled in the crank case...it's not really a matter of "metal filings in the oil" but "there's but a razor thin covering of oil on the upper moving bits".
I was looking at a pressurized system for my Torino...but my god, I am lazy.
LAZY.
P.S. if you bracktrack... the whole site is pretty neat.

Reason: I wish I could edit the freaking title..HA HA HA!! ...It should say magnet(z)
As long as people keep buying gagets, someone will be glad to take your money. Paint your air cleaner pink, it's cheaper, easier, and will accomplish the same end results...

So you're saying that painting your air cleaner will strain metal particles out of your oil? . . . Amazing!!!
Where can I buy some of this "pink paint"? I have many dollars. I must have this pink paint at once!

What the HELL are metal parts doing in your oil...?? If you have metal parts in your oil, you have more problems than a magnet will cure.
It's a gadget, pure and simple, fall for it if you wish, but your car will go several hundred thosand miles without it, if you take care of it.
Remember good old P.T. Barnum, there's a sucker born every minute.....
but then, some people don't want help, they want to dream.... so, dream on....

Maybe we should define it to ferrous vs. nonferrous metals. I can see your point. Almost all of the metal particles should be from bearings..otherwise it would be something that a magnet shouldn't be catching anyway. Like a chunk of piston...or 1/2 of a head bolt.
As a VW mechanic of 28 yrs, I have used the magnet plug/bolt and also have seen many other engines that were rebuilt by someone else that used a magnet oil drain plug/bolt. It does work very well. There are very small miniscule specks of metal that came off the edges inside the block/case even tho we use sandpaper to clean up any burrs and wash with cleaning solvent and hose down with water, then air blow dry. There is going to be some VERY SMALL particles during engine wear. Makes sense as most if not all cars have a OIL FILTER. Extra insurance is cheap in the long run. Steve
