We are European family moving to the Raleigh, NC area.

We will have a nanny staying with us to help us with the kids (2 below 5 years). She will need a car to get around and to take the kids to the kindergarden.

My question to the forum - is what the price level for a decent "nanny car" - meaning nothing fancy, used (maybe 5-10 years) , no expensive features , but stable, safe, four doors, low gas-consumer.

My idea is to buy as cheap as possible and dont think about reselling price.

So what kind of money shall I expect to use for buying the car and will you buy this kind of car private or from a dealer. If you have an input for relevant car for me to put me the right direction.

Thanks

Morten

Well, you'll get the best deal from private individual since buying from a dealer, you have to add for their profit...there are plenty of used cars for sale on craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums that or ebay is where I buy my cars. As far as type, well your kids are going to be in this car so I would probably say get a wagon or minivan. I would be particularly concerned with side and rear impact protection so maybe some people on here can offer some suggestions on specific vehicles or you can do your own research online for various makes/models. good luck.

Have you considered a VW Jetta TDI or something along those lines?

Look at a Ford Taurus

Decent mileage and room for the kids to grow plus the stuff
they bring along

My best friends 17yo daughter just picked up a '01 SES with
70k for $5,500.00, Dual Air Bags,ABS Brakes and A factory alarm
PW/PL/P.Seat and a Power window cut-out switch plus the back doors
have the child safety lock over ride

I personally know of two people that have over 160k on Taurus's
without any major issues and they are an easy car to insure.

I would look at Toyota Corollas or Honda Civics. being how you are new to the states, I would get one from a dealership.

Au-pairs and Volvo wagons are a ubiquitous combination.

Get her a Chevy Cavalier w/ low miles on it. You can find them for around $5-6k and they are plenty reliable and cheap on gas. They're also cheap to work on too, in case she tears it up.

I'd normally agree with this recommendation, but the Cavalier/Sunfire had a really lousy side-impact crash rating. With kids, i'd suggest something with a better crash rating.
