I hope the journalist will remember that, instead of the knee-jerk finger pointing at dealers or manufacturers "trying to make a buck", this is part of the price we pay to make our cars harder to steal.
I have 3 cars with embedded key chips. An extra key for each was @$25-30 from the dealer and I programmed them myself, instructions in Owner's Manual. In fact with the last car I showed the salesman how to do it.
We have two 2008 ford trucks with chipped keys. We heard the song and dance on $300 replacements at the dealer. I bought blank keys with chips on ebay for $15, it only takes a few minutes to program the key. It costs $1 to get the key ground at Lowes, the guy did mine free. You should do this before loosing a key as it takes two keys to program any others.
Wish I'd thought of that! When we bought my new '08 F150, we drove straight off the lot and over to the hardware store where we had an extra made for me (I've been known lock my self out of vehicles...) Cost us $125 for key & coding but we figured it's better than waking her up at dark:30 to call a locksmith for me!
