With a 3.8 V6 and RWD, aftermarket tuners are jumping at the chance to tune up the Hyundai Gensis coupe. We'll see this as the drifter king at the local shows.

Except for the fact that tuners generally like cars with style, and that Genesis photo looks fugly. For the Japanese imports, it'll be tough to overcome what you get right now with a base model 350Z 6spd at $27-28k new. The VQ35 block (and 6 speed transmission/rear differential) has held up well, especially when sleeved - check out Sound Performance's 1000hp 350Z. Stroker kits bump the VQ35 to 4.3L, so displacement isn't an issue for those serious about torque, especially when turbo'd. Hyundai is going to have to price the Genesis Coupe well under $25k and prove the block can handle the extra power for it to be a serious competitor.
I saw a pre-release Genesis Coupe last Sunday on the Dan Ryan Expressway just south of downtown Chicago. It had no disguising or camouflage of any type, except they covered up the Hyundai badge on the grille -- but oddly enough left the badge on the trunk lid exposed. Sharp-looking car. I'm still not sold on the front end, but it looks good from every other angle and the back end looks great -- almost looks like the back end of the BMW 6-series only done right.
It had manufacturer plates and looked like it had taken a beating, leading me to believe it was being made available to the automotive press for review. In fact it was part of a convoy of cars with manufacturer plates that were all in roughly the same class/market segment, so my guess is they were all part of a comparison test being conducted by the editorial staff of an automotive magazine. Among the cars in the convoy were a Mitsubishi Eclipse and a Pontiac Solstice GXP (read: turbocharged version), and at least one other that I can't remember. Once traffic loosened up, the driver let it rip and that bad-boy moved. My guess is it had the V6 rather than the turbo 4.
The only automotive magazines headquartered nearby are Autoweek (Detroit), Automobile (Ann Arbor MI), and Car & Driver (Ann Arbor as well). Still, one wonders what they were doing in Chicago -- maybe passing on their way through after spending the weekend at Road America up north of Milwaukee? Anyway, Autoweek doesn't really do comprehensive, full-length comparison tests, so look for an article in either C&D or Automobile in the next 2 or 3 months comparing the Genesis Coupe to its competitors including the Eclipse and the Solstice GXP.
Hyundai has come a long way. They're working their way up to the luxury and performance segments slowly and doing their homework in the process. Interesting.

I agree, Kia seems to be going no where.
Is the Genesis going to be replacing the Tiburon? I know the Tibby is a fwd but are they going to discontinue that hunk of crap or what?
YEP!!!! They're replacing the Tibby! Hyundai feels there is a market for rwd pocket-rockets. The more kids tunin'...the more kids buyin'!!!!!
Awesome!
