I have a 99 Honda Accord automatic and recently at about 30 mph I get a jolt when it changes gears. Took it in and was told it was the clutch in the transmission and that it was a pretty major repair. I have 210,000 miles on it and drive 100 miles to/from work each day. Would like to ask for some opinions or other options. So rebuild or replace?? Who would you recommend to do the work in the Greensboro area?

before you have a costly repair done, make sure that it isnt a torn transmission mount bushing. if it's the bushing, it is an easy repair to make with simple hand tools. as far as replace vs repair - do whichever is cheaper (all told, i.e. w/ cost of shipping and installation of a new transmission).

it could also be a bad u-joint. does it only jolt at around 30 MPH or does it also jolt when switching from Park to Reverse and at from 1st to 2nd gear? symptoms of a bad u joint are similar to symptoms of a torn transmission mount bushing.

anyhow - if it is something simple like a u joint or a bushing, stay away from that shop that told you it was going to be a costly transmission rebuild.

At 210k miles, you are due for a major rebuild. Find a good transmission shop you can trust, and have them check it out. It could be something else, but at that mileage, the transmission is due. You did good to go that far..!

Drop the pan & filter, see how it all looks, real slim chance it would make a difference but you could give it a shot if you felt energetic, if a couple of good shops say the same on it yup it’s rebuild time unless you can find a decent used one somewhere, but then 1,00 mi down the road it may act up too.

210,000 miles, might be time to just put that tired boy down and find another, not worth stickin more money into it.
