I just noticed today that I'm missing two of my tire valve caps. I was wondering if without those two caps, if the tires will loose air? I'm not sure how long those caps have been missing.

The caps keep mud and debris away from the valve stem. They will not loose air on their own but could if enough grit worked its way in.

Drive by a gas station and ask for some, they often have them laying around. Or buy them at target, set of four costs a buck.

Considering the nominal cost, Blitzwing . . . not worth the risk.

Any Auto Parks Store or places like Wal-Mart and Target usually have them for about a buck a set.

I went by my usual repair shop to check the air pressure. I walked around the car, taking off the stem covers so the guy checking my air wouldn't have to do it, and I found one missing. He just walked in and got one to replace it -- no charge.

Thanks. I'll stop by a gas station tomorrow and ask if they have a couple to spare. If not, I'll just buy it.

yea people steel those things all the time. next time put some lock tight on the cap, it will be harder to get them off, but hey , no one is going to screw around with them that long.

The Schrader valve is what keeps the air in. That's the little thing you see in the middle of the stem when the valve cap is off. It is a one way check valve basically.
The valve cap keeps moisture and debris from getting in there and gumming up the little Schrader valve.
I wouldn't recommend using Loc Tite. No more than the caps cost it wouldn't be worth the hassle of trying to take the caps off when you need to check tire pressure. Besides. Loc Tite might get into the Schrader valve and make it inoperable.
The metal caps are much better than the plastic ones and will stay on better. The plastic ones have a tendency to come loose due to the fact the threads are very shallow and people tighten them too much and strip the plastic threads.

Do they make black metal caps? Do they throw off the balance, any?
