Dollar for dollar and gadget for gadget, the Lexus and Hyundai are really about the same - Lexus carries a price premium due to its reputation, but Hyundai is quickly building its own good rep.
Still, if I were in the market to purchase now, I would still choose Lexus. They have a proven record of reliability. IMO, Hyundai has a long road ahead of them...

I have a friend that bought (the big hyundai, 5 years ago, whaver its called). The dealer at the time told them 'its like a lexus, but half the price!'. Actually correction, his wife bought it while he was at work. (yikes). So when i talked to her and heard that line, i told her a lexus IS could actually be had for less than she paid for the Hyundai, they were surprised. I cant imagine people putting them in the same light even. Resale value alone, you spend 7k more up front (if its optioned like that), youll get it back when you sell it. I just cant imagine someone paying 42k for a Hyundai regardless.
p.s. update to my friends Hyundai, maybe 3 years later, they went to the dealer with a bunch of little isssues and the dealer talked them into a new one. They were way upsidedown on it, and that got tagged to the new one, and I think they currently pay 450 a month (5 years) for the newer one. Forget that.
