But I personally wouldn't call these sleepers though. These are what some people call Boy racer class of cars, they are sporty compacts that are heavily modified for racing. They have a really loud annoying exhaust note, that's anything but pleasing to the ears. All that loud noise would disqualify them from being a sleeper, people would know right away from the exhaust sound that they are modified and anything but stock. I see a few these cars right here in my town, and I just can't get used to that loud buzzing sound.

The majority of those that you see in your town are more than likely just have a modified exhaust that give it that sound. No real serious mods going on.
They're sleepers in the sense that a guy driving a modified vette, viper or stang will not expect a civic with a 2.0 4cyl (although modified) to keep up with them let alone beat them. I use to be into the import tuner scene back in the early-mid 2000's. I'd say 70% of those guys running around the streets with their imports were posers. Nothing more than an aftermarket intake and exhaust. Nothing like the civic's in the videos that I posted.
Those in the know, know the potential that those little motors have. The guys that just go out and buy a Shelby GT500, Zr1, Viper or a Hellcat will "sleep" on one of those cars thinking "oh its just a little 4cyl civic with a fart can exhaust" then end up getting embarrassed.
Any of my Honda hatchbacks. I've owned several CVCC's with '81 Accord engines in them. And I loved my '94 Si.
However, my best sleeper was a '92 Civic DX hatchback bought for $500 and we swapped in a JDM Si transmission. Shorter gearing, a viscous LSD and the DX engine had more torque (but less HP than my Si), and that thing was an amazing city car. Great launches and cornered like it was on rails. And so beat up on the outside, that no one tried to steal it.

If they see what it can do, they will steal it. Its a Honda...

But can it go ludicrous speed? Watch the shift out of second @95MPH which is the point where you see nothing but taillights. bhahahaha
I also think Volvo is a wicked sleeper. Probably older Saab, too. Turbo....
Also never heard of a stolen Volvo...
What volvo?. We have a V70 wagon with a turbo 5 cylinder and it is a brick. I thought they all had pretty much the same engine. No?
