The AWD Equinox is a good choice too. We had a van that just could not make it up our driveway after a winter storm. There's no problem with a four wheel vehicle. In the North East it is a must........and you feel so nice and safe.
A good certified used Subaru is worth the money for AWD, especially when you deal with northern New England winters. The steep narrow roads can be tricky when ya deal with frost heaves and icy patches.
I think it depends alot on your driving skill and where you drive. I had no quams purchasing my RWD 07 charger (traded an 06 Wrangler 4x4), with no plans of putting snow tires on it, but my winter driving skills are far above most people on the road, and there are no steep hills or unplowed roads I have to deal with, my big concern during storms is getting hit by one of the many idiots on the roads.
