Some mechanic once said that anyone could easily get over 500,000 miles by installing a Frantz filter, using fully synthetic oil and changing it out every 2000 miles. Who knows but I just look at the oil and change it when it looks dirty. The Frantz filter is the kind that uses a toilet paper roll as the filter media. It is a passive system where much of the oil bypasses the filter but super cleans what does go through it. It is also supposed to remove acids.
I used a Franz TP oil filter setup on my cad (in the mid 50's) for 3-1/2 yrs and never pulled the drain plug. My dad was a mechanic/business owner and had a salesman sell him a setup for the 56 Cpe de Ville dad owned. He showed me the operation and I also bougt one for my 54 cad. Loved the setup, as only changed the TP (2 ply) every 1000 miles and added a qt of oil. Oil was always honey colored. Removed the canister before selling the car and installed it in a 59 Cpe de Ville and did the same routine all over again. After a long time the canister started to get acid eaten and I let the setup go with the car on selling, figured I would buy a new setup for the newer Cad I had. Problem was, not available any more. Just loved the system. Too bad they don't have it on todays cars. Steve
3000 miles should be the interval regardless of oil type. It is not the chemical breakdown of the oil that starts damaging the engine first, it is how dirty the oil is. Oils, regardless of their type, will get dirty at the same rate under the same conditions. If I am going to change my oil every 3000 miles I might as well use dino oil because it is cheaper, but I never skimp on my filters!
Well when I first got my used Honda on dino oil at 3000 miles it was still clean. I changed it at 5000 for dino oil. Oh, and FRAM filters suck. Cheap good ones are the Walamrt Supertech, and Purolator Pure Ones are probably the best.
When I was a kid in the 70's I changed the oil and filter every 1500 miles on my 68 lincoln but I drove 30 miles a day on dusty roads and plowed alot of snow and mud.
Now I change every 5000 miles when driving newer cars.
Currently drive a 94 crown victoria that burns not leaks 3qts.per 400 miles so have not changed oil in 1yr./8000 miles.
Check out the Amsoil. They have superior filters to what you can buy at Walmart/Autozone. I use the 5W-30 with their filters and go 1 year or 25,000 miles. You are wasting your money if you use full stnthetic oil and change it every 3000 miles.
They have used synthetic oils in turbine engines for decades with extended change intervals with no problems.
We went 800 operating hours between oil changes in the transmissions on the Hueys and Cobras I used to work on. Just a filter cleaning/change every 100 hrs.
If you go 3000 miles at an average speed of 40 mph, that is only 75 operating hours.
