I never gave up my 3/4 ton GMC truck as I have to occasionally tow a loaded trailer across Texas. I did stop much of my local driving.
High gasoline prices have not gone away. They're just in hibernation for the winter. This coming spring, if we're not all bankrupt, we will be saying again, "Drill baby drill!"
If you drive 12,000 miles a year, you'll use 800 gallons if you drive an SUV that gets 15 mpg. You'll use 400 if you drive a midsize sedan that gets 30 mpg. If it's just a commuter car, I would call you nuts if you wanted to spend twice as much per year on fuel. I felt that way when fuel was still $1 a gallon, and I feel that way even more strongly now. I can't understand why people think they should feel "entitled" to drive an SUV when it's really just a money sink and, besides, no fun at all to drive.
Well - I do around 30/40k a year - some in a car - some in our SUV.
When you can find a "mid size" car that will tow 8,000 lbs - let us all know
As soon as the economy turns around, gas will go back up. By the time it starts to turn around, OPEC will have cut production to get rid of the excess oil supply, so I think it will go up quickly.

I can't understand somebody else worrying more about my gas bill than I do. It all depends on the SUV if they are fun to drive at all. One of mine is a blast, the other is just a work horse that is no nonsense and all truck.
Gas is at $3.23 last time I checked here in MA. The problem with cheap gas is that it encourages people to buy gas guzzelers. When gas shoots back up to $4.60+ in the spring, you'll wish you hadn't bought an SUV
