It is hard for me to believe that the original OP has not been to the DMV in the last three weeks. Insanity is at its most...we on C-D are NOT the Motor Vehicles dept. They and the POLICE dept are the people to talk too. The Police can run a check on the plates and if shown as NOT being HOT they will do nothing. Th DMV is required to notify anyone at the address of registration that SOMEONE is asking about the vehicle and looking for access to it. The resposible party will answer to the DMV...END OF STORY. Steve

It would be smart to check your laws before doing anything, the person who manages or owns the property the car sits on needs to give you permission to remove it, the police have to be notified that you have it, lots of paper work needs to be filled out, registered letters need to be sent to the lawyer or next of kin who would have gotten the car, it's a long process. I wouldn't mess with it.
One other thing is that the buisness knows who owned the car, they should have notified someone the car was still there, if you were to take the car even with their permission you could find yourself in a lawsuit.

Drag the thing out onto the street, and let it get towed to an impound lot. It'll eventually go up for sale with an abandoned vehicle title.
I'm serious.
Your only other route is to directly contact MnDOT. They might help you, though it's going to be a hellish process.

Title and registration procedures are VERY state specific.
In each of the cases mentioned in this thread, the ONLY way you can get a specific, true, valid answer is to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in YOUR state, or contact an attorney in YOUR state (preferably one who is familiar with vehicle title issues).
I could tell you all about what I have done here in Montana, but it would do you no good at all if you don't live here.

At the moment I hear you should use Vermont. They will issue a certificate of ownership that you can use to get a title in your state. (Find a friend with a physical address in Vermont.
