I use the cruise control occasionally on long trips, but I have never noticed any increase in fuel economy when using it. In fact, when hand calculating fuel economy I notice a slight reduction on those stretches where the cruise control was used most.
I never use it on wet or slick roads.
I never use it when there is a lot of traffic.
I never use it in the mountains.
I never use it on winding roads.
It doesn't get used much.
Over the years factory cruise control has worked only on 1 of my 4 cars.I sometimes use it on the freeway but never in the city.I dont have a heavy foot & i have no problem driving the speed limit.Speeding tickets are VERY high especially in ca.The state of ca is desperate for revenue so the ca highway patrol will nail you big time even if you're only 1 mile over the speed limit.Greed is alive & well in ca.
I don't like it, either. I don't like anything that takes away the feel of the road or the feel of control. This also includes power brakes and power steering, and an automatic transmission.
Pwr steering, pwr disc brakes & auto trans are a must with me.I have had a total of 11 cars since age 16 & all 11 of my cars had ps,9 of them had disc brakes & 10 with auto trans.Ten of them was equipped with a/c (incl 1 after market) but only 7 of the air conditioners worked.I havent used a/c in 3 yrs & i live in a hot/dry climate.
I use it on long stretches of interstates where there is sparse traffic. Driving on the highways of Florida (I-95) is not conducive to Cruise Control, given the volume of traffic/tourists/etc.
I use cruise control a lot. My normal drive is from Sedona to Phoenix. For most of that drive I can sit in cruise control at around 78-79 mph (except for two stretches which are 65mph). I start hitting traffic at Anthem and that is where the cruise control comes off.
Cruise control is ideal for highways where the traffic is not too heavy and for staying within or close to the speed limit.
I love it! I road trip a lot and it helps with both MPG and my tendency to speed.
