We have decided to purchase a used car due to our money situation. A lot of the cars we have found at the dealerships were used as rentals based on what the carfax reports say. Has anyone ever had experience buying a car that used to be a rental? Is this a smart decision since rentals have so many different drivers? We are considering a GMC Acadia or a Toyota Highlander. Please let me know if you have experience or suggestions on this issue!
I bought a van that had been leased by PG&E, I had quite a few problems with it later.
My friend buys from Enterprise rent a car, gets a SUV that has average miles but up to date on service work as they go thru them pretty well. He speaks highly of Enterprise.
If you are low on $ it beats me why you would consider an SUV. Probably the best used car deals are to buy from existing owners, rather than lots. If your existing car is working, you don't need to hurry.
Would help to know where you are located, if you will have to "smog" the car, your abillity to work on your own car, if you have a good shop available to do pre-purchase inspection, etc.
I bought my last 3 cars used, from local used car dealers, and had them checked out by the local brand specialist (not a dealer, work almost exclusively on my brand and resell the brand too) who does the work on them. I've had a lot of luck this way. I find buying from private parties difficult because they often don't know anything about the cars - even what the model is, or whether the car has certain features, and don't always wash the car or remove belongings - making it hard to see the car.
As a fleet manager, I purchased low mileage, used rental cars for over twenty years, well over a couple of hundred, and never had a bad one. Rental fleets dump their cars at under 20k miles to make sure they neve have a problem.
I read on here all the time about how rental cars are abused... That is very rarely the case, and they come with a warrantee...
I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a rentaL car.
